Abstract
Sonbhadra district is located in southeastern Uttar Pradesh, India. It is a critical region for studying land use change and shifting cultivation. The district spans 6,905 km². It is home to over 385,000 Scheduled Tribe members. These tribes practice swidden agriculture. The region faces pressures from mining, deforestation, and policy shifts. It is rich in forests and mineral wealth. This study examines land use changes over the past four decades (1980–2020). It also analyzes current shifting cultivation patterns among tribes like Gonds, Cheros, and Baigas. The study uses remote sensing data from Landsat and Sentinel-2. It incorporates household surveys and ethnographic methods. The findings show a 25% loss in forest cover. There has been a 15% increase in mining areas. Fallow periods have reduced from 7–10 years to 3–5 years. Key drivers of these changes include mining expansion, market integration, and climate variability. These factors impact soil health and tribal livelihoods. The study suggests integrating traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) with policies like the Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006. This integration could enhance sustainability. The study advocates for participatory land use planning. This approach aims to balance ecological conservation with tribal welfare. It aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2, 13, and 15.
